Chupey was born in South Georgia in late August of 2018 under a shed to an outdoor dog. His mother was allowed to become pregnant by a roaming male and had several puppies, one of them very clearly different from the others. He was nearly hairless, his ears turned backwards, his eyes were tiny and squinty, and his teeth were always showing. The family who owner the mother contacted me and asked me to take him in as a rescue pup. In exchange, I made them schedule a spay with a non-profit I work with so this would not happen again.
When I met the little pup, I decided to name him Chupey because he looked like a Chupacabra to me! And the name stuck! We spent several months going back and forth the the vet getting him healthy, but it all paid off in the end. He has a special diet for his liver and we have to be wary of cold and sunburn. But that's about it!
Chupey has a partial chromosome duplication, which might explain his strange appearance. People often think that he is a Mexican Hairless Dog, but he is not. He had a DNA test and he is actually a mutt mixed with several breeds, but the two most predominant are Pitbull and Rottweiler. Chupey is now just over a year old and is about 35 pounds. All in all, Chupey is healthy and happy. He loves people, playing with other dogs, and snuggling! He wears sweaters and pajamas to stay warm and he is always smiling! Chupey shows us the importance of greeting every day with a smile. In addition, he seeks to let people know not to overlook an animal simply because they are a little different from everyone else!
